Please join us on Thursday September 29 (5:30 - 7:30 PM) in supporting Minnesota Renewable Now's house party to oppose the Xcel Energy Rate Increase. This interactive event will take place at MRN’s office in the Trailhead building at Theodore Wirth Park (1221 Theodore Wirth Parkway) and include time for:
Socializing over appetizers,
Telling your story in the onsite video booth
Learning about how the proposed 21% rate increase would impact our neighbors in North Minneapolis,
Personalizing pre-printed postcards to send to our representatives and the PUC.
After the program, feel free to linger at the onsite Mill Valley Market restaurant or explore the paths at Theodore Wirth Park.
Supporting this event is part of the Sierra Club's Building Power for a Just and Sustainable Future series. An essential part of movement building is meeting and supporting people who are feeling the most impact from our current predatory and extractive systems.
More about MN Renewable Now: MRN is at the center of the environmental justice movement for an equitable clean energy transition. They establish relationships and build bridges around Minneapolis, Minnesota, (with a focus on North & South Minneapolis Green Zones) in order to preserve the planet for future generations.
Their goal is for the world to become 100% renewable without having to depend on fossil fuels or any other dangerous forms of energy production where drilling or mining is the continuous source of energy dependency.

Energy Revolution Outreach & Celebration (Copy)

Be part of the energy revolution! Join a community and congregation door-knocking outreach event in North Minneapolis led by MN Renewable Now and MNIPL. Let residents know how they can prepare and fight Xcel Energy’s 21% rate increase.

Meet at the field behind Redeemer Lutheran Church. You’ll receive training from our Youth N’ Power teenage apprentices, who have already knocked on 467 doors. You’ll get an overview of the Xcel rate increase and how to have a conversation about what residents can do, including signing our petition to the PUC, getting a free energy audit, and what community solar options are available that can help lower their electric bills.

After the training, we’ll head out to door-knock in pairs. Each team will get a packet with a list of 25 residencies. When finished, we’ll all gather back at Redeemer Lutheran to report on how it went, share stories, enjoy a meal, and celebrate!

Invite members of your congregation or community group to join you. No experience is needed. This is a fun and easy activity that gets to the heart of climate justice action.

Register here.

Youth N' Power Summer Day Camp

Youth N' Power Summer Day Camp

Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light’s summer day camps are immersive experiences for youth in grades 3-9 to learn about environmental justice issues and community organizing. Our main theme is how to bridge climate issues with the realities of community experiences. We start by getting to know each other and building trust that camp is a safe space to be in beloved community together. Youth are introduced to the climate crisis and encouraged to draw connections between what they have heard and what they don’t understand. They learn what makes up our environment and why we advocate for a renewable economy. Programming and activities take place both at camp and through area field trips.

Learn more about the camp and register here.

Rain Barrel Educational Workshop

Your neighborhood association, the Northside Residents Redevelopment Council (NRRC), is giving away Rain Barrels to residents through the Clean Water Ambassador program. They are doing this to educate residents on how to maintain and protect clean water while giving them the tools needed to accomplish this.

In order to get one installed at your home you must do the following:

  1. Complete this survey to determine if a Rain Barrel can be installed at your residence.

  2. Attend an educational workshop at the NRRC Headquarters (1303 Golden Valley Road) on Thursday June 2nd (5:00-7:00) and implemented by MN Renewable Now's Executive Director, Kristel Porter

  3. Engage with 10 neighbors informing them of the importance of and how to protect our clean water. Program participants have two options for completing this outreach: you may either host an educational event with 10 participants or engage with neighbors door to door. Please note if you choose to host an engagement event NRRC can supply a $50 gift card towards your event.

NRRC will gift and install a rain barrel once you have completed these three steps. If you are interested in taking part in the Clean Water Ambassadors Program, please fill out the survey by Monday, May 23rd.

#POWERFEST

WHAT IS #POWERFEST?

PowerFest is an event that is made by members of the Northside community for Northside residents. It is an event for families and neighbors to come together and join the environmental justice movement by being part of co-creating a new story. In collaboration with many other environmental justice organizations across the Twin Cities, PowerFest will bring the community together for a day of fun and relationship building.

WHAT CAN YOU LOOK FORWARD TO BY ATTENDING?

  • Learn how you can participate in the North High Community Solar Garden and enter into a raffle to win a subscription that gets you a bill credit while supporting renewable energy!

  • Learn about energy efficiency opportunities to lower your energy bill burden.

  • Learn how to care for and take home a baby tree!

  • Hear from amazing local artists and performers! Including Yoga and Chill with Tangible Collective.

  • Celebrate the start of the summer with your neighbors and grow in relation!

  • Play or watch a kickball game at the end of the day! Please use this form to watch or play kickball so we can plan for how many people!

HOW DOES #POWERFEST FIT INTO THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT?

PowerFest is weaving a new story through art, movement, and the sharing of wisdom and opportunities so that we may heal, play, and be in better relation to one another. By building a community of support in the Northside around a clean energy transition, we are building a base of support for a resilient future. Resilient in the sense that PowerFest helps to build relationships in tandem with connecting Northsiders to the North High Community Solar Project. This then brings renewable energy that can sustain Northside well into the future that benefits the community by keeping the air clean, creating jobs, and allowing the Northside to control its own power. It is events like PowerFest that are the heartbeat of the environmental justice movement.

JOIN US NEXT SATURDAY FROM 10 AM TO 4 PM AT NORTH COMMONS PARK (1801 JAMES AVE N, MINNEAPOLIS) FOR #POWERFEST TO CONNECT, GROUND, CELEBRATE, LEARN, AND CLAIM OUR COLLECTIVE POWER.
